Attached to Technology and Paying the Price

Reading through this article was a bit daunting. It really put technology into perspective for me and the severity of abusing it. This article paints a grim picture of Mr. Campbell and his pathetic quality life. It is slightly amusing how they refer technology to drugs like “this is your brain on computers.” Although I found it a bit extreme to compare computers to drugs the more in depth the article explored the more it made sense to me.

I thought it was interesting how scientists explained that technology may be forcing our brains to make new connections. However, I also thought it was scary to think that all these new connections may not be helpful to us in our natural environment. It is fairly intimidating to think that people who attempt to multi-task essentially are dumbing themselves down. Relating back to the Campbells, Mrs. Campbell couldn’t manage to bake a simple batch of cookies without attempting to multi-task resulting in her burning the batch.

I found it a bit depressing how technology was essentially tearing apart the Campbell family. It was heart breaking to read of Thomas forgetting to pick his children up because he was too enthralled in his gadgets. Furthermore, I found it pathetic that they couldn’t even manage to enjoy a family vacation due to the constant interruption of e-mails and twitters! Reading this article has really made me stop and think if our world is really advancing with new technology or actually retrograding.
